SC Waste Management Limited sign short term contract with Italian company Agrotec

13/11/2010

SC Waste Management has signed a short term contract with Italian company Agrotec to provide an assessment of 6 healthcare facilities in Albania. The contract is an extension of the work conducted by SC Waste management at the Tirana University Hospital Centre and the long term work carried out with Grontmij Carl Bro on the INPAEL project.

The healthcare facilities to be assessed include 4 facilities, 2 maternity hospitals, a lung diseases hospital and the Institute of Public Health all in Tirana, the capital, and the general hospitals in Korce and Shkoder.

In addition the healthcare facilities above have recently received hydroclave technology to process and treat infectious healthcare waste.

The assessment process will include the following aspects of healthcare waste management at each of the above facilities:

  1. Current Legislative Instruments, Strategies, Policies and Plans
  2. Current Operational Practices
  3. Current levels of staff awareness
  4. Waste Management Infrastructure
  5. Waste Management Technologies employed
  6. Environmental or Waste Management Policies, Strategies or Plans
  7. Recommendations
The project outputs are as follows:

  1. A detailed assessment report for each facility with a structure in line with the above key assessment areas. This should include detailed recommendations for the healthcare facility on future compliance issues with EU waste legislation.
  2. The development of a concept model for the future waste management on a health area by health area basis including suggestions for technologies and transport methods to include both the primary health care and where possible the private healthcare sectors.
The overall objective of the assessment process is to give the INPAEL project team a better understanding of the status of healthcare waste management in different healthcare settings including primary, secondary and tertiary. The assessment should also include the private sector capacities in terms of healthcare provision and healthcare waste management. This will allow the INPAEL project team to make appropriate recommendations to the MOEFWA in relation to the management of healthcare waste throughout Albania. It will also provide INPAEL with an accurate assessment on which to base future resource requirement proposals.
